We Are So Fortunate In The Massage Profession

25 years ago there were very few texts and little research, few schools or continuing education courses for massage therapists.

Today, we have a plethora of amazing people to thank for their contributions! Sandy Fritz and Bonnie Pruden were some of the originals who gave us our massage workbooks, now we have many others on board sharing their knowledge!

My first course was Myofascial Release with John Barnes who rocked my world! Paul St. John who developed neuromuscular therapy and Dr. John Upledger who gave us cranio sacral therapy were the next classes that continued to gift me with new insights into the human anatomy.

Research is in abundance now with individuals like Ben Benjamin, Whitney Lowe, Erik Dalton, Tom Meyers and so many others who have contributed to the structural component of massage and bodywork!

The Massage Therapy Foundation of Research and colleagues like Ruth Werner and Susan Salvo continue to educate us on pathology.

We have organizations to choose from that support us in so many ways like the ABMP, AMTA and Federation of Massage to name a few. We have resource publications like Massage Magazine, Massage Today, Massage Journal and Massage and Bodywork that provide us with great articles and loads of resources.

We can count on Laura Allen to keep us posted on the politics of massage and blog on business tips.

The Massage Nerd aka Ryan Hoyme to keep students well endowed with tons of videos to learn and study throughout their lifetime ;). He also taught me and encouraged me to create video clips too, which can find on my YouTube station now.

Now you can choose from conferences all over the US and Canada, including the AMTA conventions, The World Massage Festival, The American Massage Conference and the World Massage Conference!

Angie Patrick from Massage Warehouse keeps students well stocked in supplies too!
We have so many great companies to pick and choose products and lotions. Bon Vital, BioFreeze, Biotone, Soothing Touch and so many more!!! - OMG I didn't have these 25 years ago!

New and innovative classes have developed like Pillossage with Karen Kowal and Cupping for massage therapist with Anita Shannon. You can study Oncology massage, orthopedic massage, infant massage. Tina Allen has some great classes for pediatrics!

You can study Geriatric massage with Sharon Puszko and Reflexology with Claire Miller Motte or Laura Norman. There are classes on aromatherapy, stone massage, bamboo massage and the list goes on!

Oh, let's not forget Social Networking, Like Facebook, Twitter, Linked in and now Google plus. What an amazing way to find colleagues across the world, network, share information and make new friends! I seriously have met thousands of wonderful massage colleagues through these venues!

Facebook has so many groups to join related to massage as well. You have the Massage Practice Builder that Julie Onofrio began and MassageNerd, MassageProCE, Massage Therapy Student Group, LMT Pro and tons of great places you will want to join!

Mike Hinkle even started the Massage Hall of Fame to honor those of us in the industry, including me who was inducted this year in 2011 in North Carolina! Thank you Mike!

Another thanks to Les Sweeney from the ABMP, Karen Menahan from Massage Magazine and Rick Rosen who began the Alliance for Massage Educators! All icons in the industry and completely dedicated to support us.

I love some of the books out there like Pharmacology for Massage Therapists by Jean Wibble, a well needed texts for all of us! Cherie Sohnen Moe was my first to guide me in business with Business Mastery! Hands of Light by Barbara Brennan addresses the energy work some of us will pursue. Thank you Mosby's, Lippincott and all the book publishers for bringing such great books to the Massage Industry!

And look at all the schools we now have. I had to drive almost 2 hours for my training. Then I opened a massage school years later because there weren't enough trainings for the rapid growth in the profession. Today, we have Cortiva Institute, MTTI-WellSprings, Healing Arts Center, Corinthian Schools, Body in Mind Institute, Healing Hands and even schools in Costa Rica, etc., Because of this rapid growth we also have places massage therapists can be employed like Hand and Stone, Elements Spa and Massage Envy.

I also want to thank those that honor the ancient traditions of healing, Thai, Ayurvedic massage, Lomilomi etc., and who have committed their life work through dedication in these arts. The ancient modalities, I feel, are the foundation of all that we do! Anthony James, Michael Buck and Patrick Ingrassia who spread Thai Yoga across the world!

My personal love and dedication has also been in the ancient healing arts. Including Thai massage I have studied Lomilomi, hawaiian restorative healing for 13 years of my 25 year career. I give many thanks to all the kumu who have shared their wisdom. Including Kahu Abraham, Auntie Margaret, Kumu Harry Uhane Jim, Leilani Kaleiohi, Karen Carroll, Brenda Ignacio and all those that have gifted their love and wisdom to me and my haumana. We are all blessed!

I know there are tons more of colleagues I have not mentioned that contribute so much !
Felicia Brown, Eric Brown, Scott Dartnell, James Waslaski, Wolfgang Luckman, Lee Kalpin, Art Riggs, Tom Cochran, Linda Beach, Elan Schacter, Karen Reiflinger, Judith Walker, Marjorie Brook, Lauriann Green, Bruce Baltz, Penny Prior, Lara Narayani, Nancy Kahalewai, Margie Shay, William Fee, Judi Calvert, Kumu'ola Leina'ala Brown and I could be here for hours!

I also want to say thanks to all those that have created massage music for us, like Marina Raye, Peter Kater, George Skaroulis, Steven Halpern to name a very few!

So you see we are truly blessed! Each year there are more continuing education classes and resources for us to grow and be the best we can for our clients!

I know I did not mention everyone and please accept my apology. I know you are out there and we thank you for all that you do! Please feel free to post here and put your website so Massage Therapists can find you!!

I also want to thank the thousands of students who have attended my classes and touched my heart! Shine your light and you will always be bright!

Many Blessings and Thanks to everyone who contributes to massage in any way , we are all changing this world by offering a hand ;)

Happy Holidays and Much Success in 2012
Gloria
